Your Writing Worth Isn’t Defined by Medium Boosts
Let Go of the Medium Boost Obsession
I love reading “boosted” stories on Medium, I really do.
But, I’m not a fan of deliberately trying to write for a “boost” on Medium myself.
Why, you might ask?
Renowned Canadian painter Ken Danby said, “Art is completely subjective. It’s up to the viewer to judge whether or not it has merit.”
Franz Kafka, one of the major figures of 20th-century literature, went as far as to say, “Don’t bend…don’t edit your own soul according to the fashion.”
Point being? Quality in writing is determined by the reader, not by a prescriptive and subjective set of criteria.
So what exactly does writing to get “boosted” on Medium mean?
It means aiming to craft words that truly stand out — not for algorithms or robots, nor for the vast expanse of the internet — but for the real people who sift through thousands of stories every week.
It means offering something uniquely yours, adding a touch of you to it that no one else can.
It means identifying what sets your piece apart from thousands of similar ones? What unique perspective do you offer that makes your work a must-read?
