What to do when your writing doesn’t seem to be working anymore

Every writer knows what it’s like to have this feeling: “What I’m writing isn’t working.”

“Isn’t working” here can have a lot of different meanings. It could mean, people are commenting on my writing and clearly not understanding what I’m saying. It could mean, nobody seems to be reading what I’m writing at all. And, if you’re a writer who writes in any way for a living or as a side hustle, it can often mean “I am making even less money on this than I used to.”

I know you know what I’m talking about.

The truth of the matter is that sometimes, something that was working stops working.

What can you do as a writer when that happens?

First, sit with an important question

There are frequent moments in writers’ lives where they have to ask themselves one question. And that question is: “What isn’t working?”

This isn’t nearly as simple a question to answer as you might think. Writing is a many-splendored thing, and it always involves at least two people: the writer and the reader.

It can, of course, involve far more. It can involve a literary agent you’re trying to…
