Many email marketing experts talk about subject lines, layouts, timing, and so on, but what about writing interesting copy? Creating emails that people actually want to read is key to a successful email marketing strategy. The truth is, boring emails will damage your conversions and your reputation.

Luckily, you don’t have to be the most fascinating person — or sell “exciting” products — to create interesting email copy. Here are nine simple techniques to make any email instantly more appealing to readers.

Stick to One Topic

If you have several messages competing for attention in one email, readers won’t know where to begin and they’ll quickly lose interest. Instead of trying to squeeze in several messages, focus on one topic per email. For example, if you’re sending out a survey, don’t also include a link to a new blog post.

Tip #1: Before writing any email, figure out its main purpose. You can then write your subject line, headline, copy, and call-to-action with this single objective in mind.

Be Unpredictable
