I'm a fan of self-publishing (as well as publishing in pubs) and I don't believe one should restict themselves to a singular niche. One tip I'll live by when it comes to online writing is reciprocity - supporting and encouraging other fellow writers. It also ties in nicely with Medium's relational model.
