Throughout recorded history, every generation has looked upon the next with disdain and a certain amount of distrust. But nowhere in history have generational attitudes asserted as much influence as they do now.

And right now, Gen Z is calling the shots. Millennials — to their utmost horror — are no longer in the driving seat of what defines cool.

Gen X — perhaps the generation that’s made the least impact on the cultural scene — has quietly moved on to a shared space with the baby boomers — and Gen Alpha, the new kids on the block, simply don’t have the maturity or financial cred (yet) to be taken too seriously.

The spotlight rests on Gen Z right now and if you don’t know what to do with that information, read on to understand why that matters and how you can make sure you’re not left out.

Why Gen Z Matters

First and foremost, let’s get the definitions out of the way. Who are Gen Z? They’re the kids born between 1997 and 2012. The oldest of them are now well into adulthood and are a significant presence in the workforce.
