Classical Music for Studying: The Perfect Study Buddy

While the young often favor rock and pop, it turns out classical music has the edge for studying

You might assume kids listen to pop music when they study, but recent research reveals that many students prefer classical music, more specifically, orchestral music. So what’s the appeal of classical video game music, film scores, and symphonies?

Conductor and RPO’s (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) Music Director Vasily Petrenko says, “Our research suggests many students are switching away from their popular music playlists to create a sonic environment that is calming, enriching, and helps them to focus.”

Exams can be daunting, creating stress, and it makes sense for young people to turn to soothing music that rather than generating excitement, stimulates relaxation and reduces anxiety.

According to the RPO, 44% of students listen to film soundtracks while they engage in schoolwork. Twenty-three percent enjoy musical theatre tracks, while 32% prefer video game tracks. These results paint a different picture compared to the students of the ’80s, 68% of whom opted out of the orchestral listening music genre.
