AI Development: An Existential Threat to Humanity or a Storm in a Virtual Teacup?

The concerns expressed and the risks creating the most significant alarm

With the release of ChatGPT, the world suddenly finds itself able to use a tangible form of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and experience its potential. Of course, AI has been around for many years already and is used for a wide variety of purposes. Every time you use face ID to unlock your phone, AI makes it possible. When you switch on Netflix and it recommends a film you might enjoy, AI analyses what you’ve already watched and selects something you’d like. AI has been collecting and using the information to tell us what we want for much longer than we realize.

The first successful Artificial Intelligence program was written as early as 1951 by Christopher Strachey, director of the Programming Research Group at Oxford University. And in the 1980s, the first ‘deep learning’ technique was developed by expanding an algorithmic toolkit created by John Hopfield and David Rumelhart.
