Many companies actively discourage employees from pursuing profit-seeking work outside of their jobs. They tend to worry about having their employees care deeply about something other than working for them. Other employers, however (American Express is an example), go as far as to encourage their staff to find a side hustle in pursuit of being more complete versions of themselves.

More and more people have entrepreneurial ambitions alongside their day jobs today, and have employers who believe that external goals help keep workers excited and motivated in life, in general. They believe that these effects are likely to make them better at their day jobs, perhaps helping them think of new ways to innovate at work.

If a side hustle is allowed where you work, but you’ve never considered finding something to do, it could be a good idea to give it some thought. A side hustle can be a wonderful learning experience that can potentially improve your career skills, and make you a more valuable employee at your current job, and, not to mention, make you a more attractive candidate for future jobs that you try out for.
