The recent launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT has created a stir in the technology and internet world. The artificial intelligence-fueled chatbot has demonstrated the ability to understand common language questions and prompts and respond in seemingly equally natural language. ChatGPT is artificial intelligence that’s been “trained” to answer questions and prompts in natural language. ChatGPT has been trained on a text set that included over 8 million documents and over 10 billion words. It was further trained by human “coaches” to help refine the answers and how ChatGPT responds.

The resulting chatbot has been eye-opening and exciting to some, and it’s been scary and threatening to others. As Arthur C. Clarke stated in his widely quoted 1962 work, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic,” and this very advanced new technology has created a response similar to how people respond to magic. To ease some fears and properly respond to others, it’s helpful to provide some examples of what ChatGPT can do and what it currently can NOT do.
